When are volunteers needed: Commitment:
3 hours on Saturday 9th May 2026. You can choose between a morning shift (9.30am - 12.30pm) or an afternoon shift (12pm - 3pm). You can choose to volunteer more hours than this, but there is no obligation to do so!

Role description:
York Unlocked is currently recruiting for Event Volunteers to join the York Unlocked team to act as stewards within the buildings opening up as part of York Conservation Trust’s 50th Anniversary Year (YCT50) on Saturday 9th May 2026, in York City Centre. There are three buildings opening as part of this one-off event; these buildings are 60 Goodramgate, 77 Walmgate, and Herbert House.
The main purpose of the Event Volunteer role is to act as a voluntary steward within one of these designated buildings while the building is open to visitors during the event, and to ensure visitors receive a warm welcome and are given clear directions around the building.
You will be answering practical queries from the public, controlling the flow of visitors into the building, and ensuring health and safety requirements are adhered to at all times.
This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in York’s amazing architecture and heritage who is looking to grow their local connections, and who enjoys involvement in events and public-facing roles.
Main Tasks:
- Act as a steward within a designated building (Either 60 Goodramgate, 77 Walmgate, or Herbert House).
- Provide a friendly welcome to the public visiting your building.
- Give directions to the public visiting the building.
- Answer any practical queries from the public which arise during the event.
- Read the operational and health and safety materials provided in advance.
- Be aware of health and safety requirements for the building you are stewarding and ensure these are adhered to at all times.
Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
- No specific knowledge or experience is necessary, just an enthusiasm to be involved in the event.
- A willingness to work in a public-facing / Front of House role.
