Role description:
Supporting independence volunteers help us to improve the quality of life for vulnerable and isolated people, supporting them to retain their independence and reduce social isolation. Volunteers visit older people, providing social contact and companionship. They may support with trips out, and with practical tasks, such as shopping. They monitor the well-being of their older friend and communicate with the befriending coordinator as needed.
Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
Volunteers are friendly, patient and good listeners, with an ability to understand the needs of older people and empathise with them. The volunteer will need to bring a reassuring presence to the service user. Being flexible is a key attribute to allow adaptation to the person’s needs and changing plans.
