Role description:
Inspire our visitors!
As an Object Handling Volunteer, you’ll help deepen the connection visitors have with our world-class collection through direct, hands-on encounters, and having relaxed conversations around the science and engineering that shape our lives.
The handling collection is made up of objects similar to those displayed in the museum that visitors can pick up and examine. From intricate model locomotives to British Rail uniforms and Victorian foot-warmers, the handling collection offers authentic touchpoints that ignite curiosity. By facilitating safe, accessible object sessions, you’ll help, spark conversation, support our mission to be Open for All and inspire our visitors.
In this role you’ll build skills in visitor experience and museum learning, interpreting historical and STEM stories for audiences of all ages. Full training will equip you to handle objects with care, share engaging narratives and support the museum’s programme, following a flexible roster that allows you to deliver half-day sessions when you can.
In this role you’ll:
• Be supported to develop skills and experience in object handling and engaging audiences
• Help make our museum more accessible for different audiences through delivering hands-on engagement linking to our world-class collection and facilitating relaxed conversations
• Have the optional opportunity to research new stories related to objects within our handling collection
• Be the friendly face of the museum, ensuring all visitors feel welcome
• Signpost visitors to related content to explore further our museum and galleries
