The City of York Council (CYC) has prepared a special edition of the business email update to provide you with latest information about the rising river levels in the city.
Flood defences deployed to keep the city safe
This is a special update on the latest measures we have put in place to protect against rising river levels.
We want to reassure you that our frontline teams, and partners, are doing everything necessary to protect our city and provide support and advice to those affected.
The Environment Agency has updated their predictions and they are now expecting the river to peak between 4.5m and 5m tomorrow morning (Tues 22 February).
We’ve put measures in place to protect the city, and householders and owners of businesses which expect to be affected should deploy their own defences.
People who choose/need to leave their homes and who do not have family and friends they can stay with can call 01904 551550 at any time to access emergency accommodation with us. This will be staffed by MIRT who are experts in supporting people in difficult situations.
What are CYC doing?
We have acted quickly to put in place defences to protect the areas most likely to be affected. These include:
|
We understand you might have questions or concerns, and we wanted to share answers to some common questions you might have.

How will I know if my property might be affected?
We are sending letters to residents living in properties that might be affected by river levels. These will include updates on the local measures being put in place.
You can also check your risk of flooding on the gov.uk website at https://www.gov.uk/check-flood-risk.
What do I do if my property is at risk?
Frontline teams are putting in place the local and citywide flood defences, so any resident or business at risk of flooding should also put their own flood plans in place.
If your home or property is at immediate risk of flooding – then you don’t need to contact us. We will provide sandbags to communities based on the latest forecasted levels.
If you want to, you can find out more about where you can purchase sand bags from at https://www.york.gov.uk/floods#sandbags.
Can I still travel?
Riverside walks and paths are currently affected. The riverside paths across city and Terry Avenue are currently closed. Millennium bridge will also be closing.
Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists should not enter or travel through flood water which has risks from hidden obstacles and health hazards. Please check your route before travelling if it is prone to flooding.

What can businesses do?
If your property is likely to be affected by flooding it is a good time to ensure your flood plan is up to date, and refresh your business continuity plan if you need one.
The messaging that we have shared is that York is still very open for business, and we welcome people to continue to visit us.
Stay alert and stay safe
We know that York has some of the most supportive communities. If it is safe to do so, we are asking people to check on your neighbours and friends.
We are contacting vulnerable residents who are receiving care services in affected areas, to ensure they are aware of the support and services available to them.
We ask that all residents take care to avoid flooded area such as riverside paths and cycle ways.
