City of York Council’s Ward Grants provide funding for community projects that benefit residents within individual wards across York.
Projects should help meet local ward priorities and provide opportunities or services for people living in the area.
Funding proposals should also contribute towards one or more of the Council Plan priorities:
- Health and Wellbeing
- Tackling the Cost-of-Living
- Environment and Climate Emergency
- Equality of Opportunity
Projects must be based in and provide a service within the ward they are applying to. Organisations working across several wards can apply in each area, provided they can demonstrate specific needs and outcomes for each ward.
Who can apply?
Applications can be made by groups and organisations including:
- Voluntary and community organisations
- Community initiatives
- Residents’ associations
- Community halls
- Sports and other clubs
- Parish councils, where they are also contributing financially to the project
- ‘Friends of’ school groups, but not schools themselves
Applicants must be constituted and hold a bank account, or have a sponsor organisation that can hold the funding on their behalf.
Individuals cannot apply.

The current funding round is open until 27 September 2026, subject to funds being available in your ward.
Before applying, check your individual ward page for its current funding availability, budget and priorities.
Applicants should complete the Ward Grant Application Proposal Template before submitting the online application. This will help you prepare information about your organisation, project and expected costs.
Funding must normally be spent within the financial year in which it is awarded.
