Role description:
The role of an appropriate adult supports young person who have been arrested and requires an adult to oversee their detention and interview at the police station. Volunteers ensure that young people’s rights are adhered to and they receive the care they require whilst in police custody. The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and accompanying Codes of Practice ensure that whenever a young person under the age of 17 is detained and questioned at a police station he or she must be accompanied by an independent adult known as the 'appropriate adult'. The appropriate adult is there to safeguard the young person’s rights and civil liberties, aid communication between the young person and the police and look after their physical and emotional wellbeing.

Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
There are no formal qualifications required to be an appropriate adult. Below are a list of attributes needed to be an Appropriate Adult.
Having an interest in the welfare of young people and understanding of the issues facing young people with a non-judgmental approach and understanding of anti-discriminatory practices.
Alongside effective listening and communication skills, availability to be flexible over weekends, weekdays, and evenings. The ability to follow and comply with all YJS and CYC policies and procedures and maintain confidentiality. To liaise effectively with police, YJS & other relevant agencies.
A commitment to being an Appropriate Adult for a minimum of one year.
Volunteers must be 18 or over.
Satisfactory DBS and Reference checks.
Ability to be at the police station within 1 hour of request when on call.
