Role description:
As part of Digital Friendly York at CYC we offer a coding club, part of the Coder Dojo network, to young people aged 7-17. The role involves supervising a group of young people during one of their monthly sessions, where participants will be using various coding websites to create their own projects. As well as helping to set-up and pack away equipment.
All CYC volunteers are given volunteer training and a Coder Dojo training session also. Individuals do not need to have a background in coding, rather an interest in supervising young people who are coding. The young people attend sessions with their parent/ guardian. Volunteers will not be expected to run the club or be alone with participants. We will have a member of staff from Digital Friendly York present at each session.
Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
Skills: Basic IT knowledge, assisting young people with logging on and off a computer/ laptop.
Navigating websites, assisting young people getting online.
Understanding basic health and safety when setting up equipment for a session.
Behaviour: To be friendly, approachable and professional with people of all ages.

What will the volunteer gain/benefit from:
Volunteers will benefit from interacting with families and especially young people who are interested in coding. If you have an interest in coding yourself this will be developed through this experience. In addition, volunteers will benefit from interacting with locals and fostering a sense of community.
