Role description:
Volunteer Finance Director
Location: Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York
Type: Volunteer | Approx. 30 hours/month

Do you enjoy working with numbers and want to support something really special in your local community? We're looking for a Volunteer Finance Director to join the team at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre—a beautiful, much-loved, volunteer-run theatre in the heart of York.

This is a brilliant chance to use your skills (or build new ones!) while making a real difference to a thriving local charity. You’ll be part of our Board of Trustees and work closely with our Assistant Finance Director and a lovely group of volunteers.

You’ll also help out as a Duty Manager at a couple of performances each month—so you’ll really get to be part of the theatre buzz!

What you’ll be doing:
This is a key role that helps keep our theatre financially healthy. You’ll be:

Processing invoices and charges to hirers

Putting together budgets and financial reports for the board

Reconciling accounts using Xero and our ticketing system

Managing bar and front-of-house income (cash and card)

Taking care of VAT and Performing Rights payments

You’ll be fully supported and working alongside others—it’s very much a team effort.

Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
What we’re looking for:
You don’t have to be a finance expert (though if you are—amazing!). We’re looking for someone who:

Has some experience or interest in finance, bookkeeping, or accounting

Enjoys working with others and is happy to get involved

Is organised, reliable, and pays attention to the little things

Can commit to around 30 hours a month, including monthly trustee meetings and show nights

Experience with Xero or similar software is helpful, but not essential—we’re happy to support you in learning.
