When are volunteers needed: Volunteer mentors are expected to commit to roughly 2-4 hours a week with there young person. We also ask for a minimum of 1 year commitment to the role.

Role description:
A mentor’s main role is to support a young person on a one to one basis, to explore and develop new leisure time activities and access local facilities. However, as the relationship between mentor and young person develops, the mentor will be expected to respond appropriately to the individual needs of the young person; these could involve support in managing their anger, increasing school attendance, building confidence and self esteem etc. Each mentoring relationship is different and what particular path it follows is dependent on the needs of the young person. Mentors are not expected to spend more than 4 hours a week (maximum) working with their young person or to take on work they do not feel comfortable with.
Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
There are no formal qualifications required to be a mentor and you need not have any previous experience of working with young people however we do ask for volunteers to be aged 18 year and over, have a non-judgmental attitude and an understanding of the needs of young people - particularly those at risk. Have the ability to build and maintain relationships with young people, communicate well with others and to work well alone and as part of a team. To have a respectful attitude to young people, a commitment to young people’s participation in decision making and an understanding of the importance of professional boundaries.
