Today (18 March) is Anti-Slavery Day. Many people believe that slavery ended many years ago. Nothing could be further from the truth. Slavery now takes many different forms, most of which are present here in York and North Yorkshire. Cases identified by the local police, councils and community organisations in this region include:

  • cannabis farming
  • child exploitation
  • domestic servitude
  • human trafficking for sexual exploitation
  • labour exploitation
  • nail bars
  • vulnerable young people carrying drugs from urban centres
  • care homes
  • domiciliary care
  • hand car washes.

An information leaflet, published by North Yorkshire and York Modern Slavery Partnership raises awareness of Modern Slavery and provides guidance on what signs to look out for and how you can stop it.
