Growing Green Spaces has awarded nine new grants to green volunteering projects across York. Funded by the City of York Council and managed by York CVS, the grants programme is aimed at supporting volunteers to improve parks and open spaces for people and wildlife.

The new projects, which are detailed on the Growing Green Spaces website, range from gardening and food growing groups in parks to small community gardens and planting sessions. Funding has been awarded to well established groups, such as the Friends of Glen Gardens and Edible York, and to budding organisations like The Lanes Community Garden and Bishophillbillies. Some are geared towards social gardening and access to healthy food, whereas others focus on conservation, increasing biodiversity and making new wildlife areas.

Stef Lambert, Growing Green Spaces Co-ordinator:

“Volunteering in open spaces has suffered as a result of COVID-19, with measures such as the rule of six meaning that groups need to adapt and take precautions. Yet the pandemic has also highlighted the inestimable value of public green spaces, with many finding their local green spaces crucial for their mental and physical wellbeing.”

Groups such as the Friends of Rowntree Park have developed creative and flexible ways for people to volunteer alone once inducted and have reported increases in volunteers since lockdown.

Volunteers from Holgate Community Garden, which received Growing Green Spaces funding in 2019, have described the small but vibrant space as a ‘lifesaver’, a ‘hub of activity’ and a source of ‘the community spirit which is so lovely and unique and has been invaluable, especially in lockdown’.

These important community assets are, however, hugely reliant on volunteers after years of budgetary cuts to local authorities. The benefits of volunteering in green spaces are well documented and, as winter approaches, opportunities to socialise outdoors could represent a lifeline for those who are facing social isolation.

Stef Lambert, Growing Green Spaces Co-ordinator:

“All people need is enthusiasm and the seed of an idea for how to improve their local area. We can give you the resources and advice you need to get going and link you up with groups who can share their expertise and experience.”
