Scouting is #GoodForYou

By Nigel White, District Commissioner, York Ebor Scouts

We want to recruit 50 more Scouting volunteers in York over the next 12 months to help young people bounce back from the impacts of COVID!

Research has proven that Scouting has positive impacts on mental health and wellbeing, resilience, education beyond the “classroom”, and future employability, for both our young people and volunteers! We actively engage and support young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to Society.

We have 1700 young people in Scouts across York, in 26 Scout Groups run entirely by adult volunteers, bringing young people together from different communities, to build skills, friendships and understanding. I have been inspired by the creative ways these volunteers kept our young people engaged at home through Pandemic restrictions, and continued to build their resilience, self-belief, and belief in others, through a varied programme of activities.

Scouting is more relevant than ever in the current world, improving global collaboration and social mobility, whilst developing practical skills for life, and helping our members to succeed ongoing.

Volunteer opportunities

Although our numbers took a dip during 2020 for the first time in several years they are recovering since we returned to Scouting face-to-face. Most of our Groups are now full with waiting lists, but we could give opportunities to more young people if we had more adult volunteers.

We can find a place for all volunteers, and can flex this around your busy lives, and what you are able to give. Scouting is good for our volunteers too as highlighted by a quote from

Joe Fillingham, Scout Leader:

“We all have such a great time – leaders and young people. It’s fantastic for my own wellbeing”.

As well as options to get involved directly with planning and delivering activities for young people, we need volunteers to help in the background on an ad-hoc basis, in our Scout Group Committees, fundraising, administration, and activity support. If you want to explore the opportunities contact your local Scout Group direct, or email: volunteering@eborscouts.org.uk and we will connect you to the right people.
