This Volunteers’ Week, we asked a couple of Volunteers and a charity that has a team of Volunteers to share their stories and experiences with us…

Volunteering is a two-way blessing, and all in name of Age UK York.

As a volunteer with Age UK York, over several years, I am sure I get as much pleasure out of the exercise as the people we visit. The obvious pleasure on their faces is enough for me to know it is all worthwhile. I particularly remember one gentleman, whose daughter sent me a letter following his death, saying how much he enjoyed my visits.

I can recommend volunteering to the “older ” generation. At age 88 years I can exchange “chat” with my friends, who are usually advancing in years – WW2, National Service, no mobile phones, computers, etc., etc., etc., even before TV and travel to sixty countries!

It’s been a pleasure to become a Volunteer and join a team that does so much good for others!

Having nursed my husband for two difficult years and then experiencing his passing in the summer of last year, I found that volunteering with Age UK York enabled me to focus on something new and different. Making an effort to get up and out of the house to go to ‘work’ was a great incentive for me.

Once I began volunteering with Age UK York I met new people and am currently working with a fantastic team at my local shop. Everyone is so friendly and supportive and the role I do gives me a great sense of satisfaction.

They are a fab team of people and we really couldn’t do what we do without them all!

We’ve just been out for lunch this week with our office Volunteer Tineke (pictured right) who has just recently stepped down from this role. Tineke has volunteered for us each week for six years and has helped us out with all manner of admin tasks and has been behind the scenes organising us and cheering us on as a charity. We’re so thankful for all she has contributed.

We run all of our services through our volunteers. We’re so thankful for the amazing team of people who generously give their free time to help us put on a range of parenting courses across the city every half term and also for our volunteer Support Couples who are part of our Reconnect team working alongside couples wanting to make small changes to strengthen their couple relationships. They are a fab team of people and we really couldn’t do what we do without them all. This Volunteers Week we want to say a BIG THANK YOU to all who are involved!
