Role description:
Excel Learning Trust Board has established Local Governing Boards (LGBs) for schools within the Trust, which are subcommittees of the Trust Board.

The primary role of governors is to provide support and challenge to the Principal / Head of School in ensuring the best possible outcomes for all children. Details of LGB focus can be found in the Scheme of Delegation on the Trust website. The LGB is not required to manage financial resources, staffing, Health and Safety or many of the other areas traditionally associated with a maintained school governing body as these issues are dealt with at Trust Board / Executive level. However, LGBs play an important role in focussing on educational outcomes, safeguarding, SEND, equality, behaviour, attendance and pupil welfare. In addition, governors may be asked to serve on complaint or suspension/exclusion panels from time to time.

The role of a governor is largely a challenge and scrutiny role; they do not manage a school day-to-day, but are required to oversee its long-term development in conjunction with the Trust.

Time commitment: The average time commitment is 10-15 hours per term. This includes meetings, background reading and visits.

The normal term of appointment is four years. However, as a volunteer you can resign at any time if your circumstances change.

Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
LGBs rely on a variety of experiences and perspectives and no specific prior knowledge is required. We aim to have LGBs with a range of skills and backgrounds and welcome interest from all communities and backgrounds. Training and support is available for new and existing governors. If you are passionate about education or making a difference to the lives of children in our city please get in touch.
