York CVS is offering free Active Bystander Training to help people working and volunteering across York’s VCSE sector feel more confident recognising and responding to unwelcome behaviour.
Delivered by Laura Harris from North Yorkshire Sport, this practical session will help you:
- Recognise when to take action
- Understand what you can do
- Feel confident about how to respond
The training will explore unwelcome behaviour, why we respond to situations in different ways, and practical tools that can help us become more confident active bystanders.
What will the training cover?
The session is split into three sections:
Unwelcome Behaviour
You’ll explore what unwelcome behaviour can look like, alongside assumptions, biases and our own responses to different situations.
The training can cover areas including racism, misogyny and sexism, disability, LGBTQIA+ issues, or unwelcome behaviour more generally.
The Science Bit
Why do we react the way we do when we witness something that doesn’t feel right?
This section looks at some of the human science behind our behaviour, what it means to be a bystander or active bystander, and how we might respond in challenging situations.
The Toolkit
You’ll be introduced to the 5 Ds Toolkit, a recognised approach to active bystandership.
Using practical scenarios, you’ll explore different ways to respond to unwelcome behaviour and consider how you can put the toolkit into practice personally, within your work and across your organisation.
Who can attend?
The training is free and funded by York CVS.
It is open to Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations based and operating in the City of York, including York Outer, as well as organisations supporting beneficiaries in York.
Due to high demand, places are limited to two people per VCSE organisation.
The training will take place at Priory Street Centre in York, with hot drinks available on arrival.
