This photography competition for community groups in North Yorkshire gives the chance for organisations to win up to £3,000 in funding to showcase their work.
The competition is designed to celebrate and showcase the crucial and amazing work of community groups, charities and social enterprises covering York and North Yorkshire. The Two Ridings Community Foundation in conjunction with the High Sheriff or North Yorkshire, Clare Granger, is inviting community groups to send in amateur photography that captures the essence of their community.
The images will be judged in two categories:
- Our People
- Our Place
“We really want groups to show off the people of our region and what community means to them. They say a photo says a thousand words, and we want to see that! We know that community organisations in the region do such vital work for local people. We want them to capture the energy, the vibrancy and the magic that is happening all over.” said Bec Horner, Communications Manager at Two Ridings.
“We imagine that many photos in both categories will include people. Volunteers for example, or people that come to an activity. But we do want to stress that groups must have permission from any person they are photographing. We are happy for photographs to be literal or artistic, but we want them to be amateur shots. We don’t want groups to get a professional photographer in!”
The deadline for photographs to be submitted in Tuesday 5 September 2023.
A panel of six judges will shortlist the three most impactful photos in each category in Septemeber. The shortlisted groups will be invited to a Photography Exhibition & Showcase in October where the finals decisions will be made. The 1st prize in each category is £3000, 2nd prize is £2000 and the 3rd prize £1000. These are unrestricted funds which means that groups can use it to fund anything they choose.
The Photography Exhibition & Showcase is on Wednesday 25th October at Allerton Castle, Knaresborough, where the winning and highly commended photographs will be displayed. All the images in the exhibition will also be eligible for an Audience prize.
The winning groups will have a unique profile-raising opportunity at the event to talk about their photographs, the people they support, their communities and the projects they deliver.
All highly commended entries will subsequently be displayed on the Two Ridings website and the winning entries used in social media campaigns and other promotional material, giving the winning groups a powerful opportunity to showcase their work and to reach new supporters.
