Championing Co-production in Health and Social Care across York
Co-production puts people and their experiences at the heart of decision making.
What is co-production?
You may be thinking, what is co-production and what does a co-production champion do?
Co-production is an equal relationship between people who use a service and the people responsible for delivering the service. By working together from design through to delivery, services work for the people who use them because they are designed them.
We believe:
The best people to shape our healthcare systems are those with lived experience of using it.
Everyone has skills, knowledge, and experiences that are valuable.
If we work together as equal partners, we can achieve better results.
Our Focus Areas
We work with communities across York to understand what good mental health support looks like to them. We’re committed to seeking out unheard voices and bringing them into the conversation, making services more inclusive, accessible, and effective for everyone.
Current areas of focus for our co-production work include:
Mental Health Hubs
York is transforming its mental health services with the development of three new hubs:
- Clarence Street Hub – Now open and offering daytime mental health support in the city centre
- Acomb Garth – A brand-new 24/7 hub, co-designed with people with lived experience
- Burnholme/Tang Hall – A third hub is in development to expand access across the city
Neurodiversity
We’re supporting grassroots initiatives and community-led projects that improve support for neurodivergent people in York, working in partnership with those with lived experience.
Inclusive Mental Health Services
We’re committed to making all mental health services in York more inclusive. That means listening to as many people as possible, hearing their stories, and working together to influence real change in the way support is delivered.
Join Our Network of Champions
There are lots of ways to get involved in co-producing services across York – from Conversation Cafés and lived experience panels to helping shape brand-new services.
If you’d like to be part of this work, please fill out the form below to receive our monthly Co-production Newsletter. It includes opportunities to get involved, updates on current projects, and events happening across the city.
The newsletter is just the start – we’ve got big plans over the coming year, and we’d love you to be a part of it.
Meet our Co-production Champion

Ben
Co-production Champion
“Coming from lived experience with mental health issues myself, I’m really passionate about putting people at the heart of designing and implementing services that work for the people who use them. For too long, services have tried to put square pegs in square holes, and that’s not how the world works, let alone mental health services!
I aim to offer a safe and non-judgmental space for anyone who wants to share their thoughts and feelings about the services they use. No problem is too small to share. Every voice matters.
I truly believe co-production is the way forward in designing and implementing services, but there can be challenges and it’s important to address those. In life, as in co-production, we don’t always agree on things, and that’s ok. Healthy debate and discussion moves us forward, it gets us thinking about different points of view, and we must respect everyone’s point of view, however much that differs from our own.”
