Learn, understand and take action during Hate Crime Awareness Week
A programme of free online webinars will take place across York and North Yorkshire as part of Hate Crime Awareness Week, Monday 12 to Friday 16 October 2026.
Hate Crime Awareness Week is a national week of action which brings organisations and communities together to raise awareness of hate crime, build trust in services, increase confidence in reporting and promote the support available to people who experience hate crime.
Throughout the week, a series of free webinars will explore hate crime, discrimination, prejudice and harmful behaviours in different settings. Sessions are open to book through Eventbrite.
Monday 12 October
Hate Crime Awareness in a youth work setting | 3:30pm-4:30pm
Led by Clare Yates from North Yorkshire Youth, this session will explore hate crime and hate incidents, their impact, barriers to reporting and how to support victims. It will also look at recognising and responding to community tensions.

Anti-racism in the sports environment | 6:30pm-8:00pm
Laura Harris from North Yorkshire Sport will lead an interactive workshop exploring the impact of racism, how to respond effectively to concerns and how we can help create environments based on belonging, equity and respect.

Tuesday 13 October
Misogyny, sexism and violence against women and girls | 12:00pm-1:00pm
Led by Carmel Offord from IDAS, this workshop will explore the behaviours, attitudes, systems and structures that enable sexism, misogyny and gender-based violence, alongside the changes we can make to help prevent violence against women and girls.

Far Right Ideology in young people | 3:30pm-4:30pm
Clare Yates from North Yorkshire Youth will explore far-right extremism and radicalisation among young people, including how to recognise potential signs, understand susceptibility and have conversations with young people about these issues.

Wednesday 14 October
Those harmed by Hate Crime: Do they seek help? | 12:00pm-1:00pm
Nathalie Noret, Senior Lecturer in Psychology in Education at the University of York, will share findings from the All About Respect project, which explored the experiences of gender-based violence and hate crime among young people aged 16–25 in York and North Yorkshire.

Basic Awareness of Misogyny in a youth work setting | 3:30pm-4:30pm
Another session led by Clare Yates, this webinar will look at what misogyny means, how it can appear in youth settings and its impact on young people, as well as challenging harmful behaviours, reporting incidents and effective signposting.

Thursday 15 October
Antisemitism and Extremism in 2026 | 10:30am-12:00pm
Alex Webster from the Community Security Trust will explore the history and origins of antisemitism, how it presents in extremist spaces and wider society, current UK trends and common themes and tropes.

Navigating Protected Characteristics | 3:00pm-4:30pm
Chris Hailey-Norris, CEO of Up for Yorkshire, will lead a practical session looking at protected characteristics, what they mean in practice and how they can contribute to more inclusive workplaces, services and communities.

Basic Introduction to Incel Subculture in a youth work setting | 3:30pm-4:30pm
Clare Yates will introduce the language, terminology, archetypes and ideologies associated with incel subculture. The session will also cover recognising concerns, supporting young people and building resilience against harmful narratives.
