MySight York is an independent local charity supporting more than 1,500 people across the city who are blind or partially sighted. Our Pink Elephant collection boxes, hosted in businesses across York, provide essential unrestricted income that helps fund services such as our Eye Clinic Liaison Officer, equipment advice, home visiting and social groups. We are looking for a volunteer to help sustain and grow this much-loved network.
When are volunteers needed: You will serve as a warm and welcoming ambassador for the charity, helping to strengthen our presence within the local community. This is an ad‑hoc opportunity, so there are no fixed days or times required; we will work flexibly around your availability. As a charity, we attend regular events and host stalls throughout the year, and we will share these dates with you in advance to ensure you have plenty of time to plan ahead.

Role description:
The role includes:
- Liaising with businesses across York to arrange new Pink Elephant hosts on an ongoing basis
- Working with the Fundraiser to identify and approach new opportunities, particularly busy businesses that regularly handle cash payments
- Placing and maintaining Pink Elephant collection boxes
- Collecting boxes 2–3 times per year and returning them to MySight York HQ
- Providing thank you letters and sharing impact updates with host businesses
- Acting as a positive ambassador for MySight York in the local community
- This role directly contributes to funding services that help local people adjust to sight loss, regain independence, and stay socially connected.
Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
We are looking for someone who:
- Lives within reasonable travelling distance of York businesses
- Is confident communicating with local business owners and staff
- Is organised and able to travel independently across the city
- Is enthusiastic about supporting people living with sight loss
- Volunteers must be over 18 and provide two references. No prior experience of supporting people with sight loss is required – full training is provided.
