Role description:
A community transport driver uses either their own car or our community car to transport, mostly older people to hospital, doctors or other medical or wellbeing appointments. Staff in the office located in Boroughbridge take bookings and send out email requests for each transport to the email group of transport drivers. The volunteer driver responds to the email request, only if they are available for a specific transport. Staff will then allocate the transport booking to one of the drivers who has responded to the email, with the full details of the person needing the transport. The volunteer driver will then contact the service user and arrange a suitable pick up time. Most transport requests are return journeys. If using their own car, the driver will be reimbursed for the journey by the service user.

Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
Patience, kindness, and flexibility. Ability to access and send emails. Access to a telephone, preferably a mobile phone. Safe, confident driver, with a current UK driving licence, with no more than 3 points thereon. If using own car, it must meet all legal safety standards for driving on UK roads.

Will there be a DBS check? Yes

Driving Licence required? Yes

Volunteer's own vehicle required? No

Suitable for:
Ongoing Volunteering

What will the volunteer gain/benefit from:
We are told by our volunteers, that community transport driving is extremely rewarding.
They meet a variety of older people, with fascinating stories to tell, whilst on their journeys to medical appointments. Many of the older people using the transport live alone and often have no family support nearby. They may not have spoken to anyone in days and enjoy and benefit immensely from chatting with our volunteer car drivers. The benefit for both service user and volunteer drivers can be reduced social isolation, meeting new and interesting people, increased health and wellbeing.
