Role description:
Share your skills with those attending our sessions who are looking to build confidence using their phones, access the Internet or are just stuck with 752 notifications in their email inbox. It could be anything. We don’t need experts and you don’t need to know everything. We just need those who can help people to navigate the digital world with a bit more ease and understanding. Volunteers will be working with visitors to our community food support and Internet cafe sessions. Ideally we’d ask you to attend two sessions a month, or more if possible so that we can have a Digital Champion at each of the 5 sessions held every week (see details of sessions below). You don’t need to cover the same session each time, in fact we’d rather you can support different sessions so that we can support a wider variety of people.
● Complete about 4 hours of free online training covering a number of core skills in sharing knowledge - more training is available in Digital Skills if you’d like to complete it - it is all CPD certified.
● Have a short meeting with our Safeguarding Officer before starting as some of our clients are vulnerable adults.
● Agree to follow our safeguarding and safe working practice policies.
● Update the Digital Champion record so we know how much support we are providing.
● Volunteers supporting vulnerable adults need to complete a DBS check (free)
Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
There are no formal qualifications needed, we are looking for Digital Champions who love sharing their skills and supporting others. You would need to have some of the following skills:
● Confident in use of a smart phone or tablet or computer or all of them
● Enthusiastic about the positive effect of technology
● Sociable and personable
● Patient
● Understanding why people want to learn
● Able to empathize with diverse groups
● Willing to have fun
● Good communication skills
● Able to explain technology in a simple way
● Willing to learn as well
Will there be a DBS check? Yes
Driving Licence required? No
Volunteer's own vehicle required? No
Suitable for:
Ongoing Volunteering
Skilled Volunteer
Work Experience
What will the volunteer gain/benefit from:
Digital Champions get free online training which can be used for your continuous professional development (CPD) if you are working (see details of training below)
● Further free online skills training is available on the Digital Unite website
● We’ll keep a skills list so that we can guide questions to the right peer supporter.
● We will have a selection of devices and accessibility tools that you can use. You are not expected to use your own devices for demonstrating.
● A supportive community so that you too can learn new skills and gain confidence.
