Role description:
The IMB helps to ensure that proper standards of care and decency are maintained within places of detention, including prisons and immigration detention centres, to ensure detained individuals are being treated fairly and humanely. As an IMB member at Millsike, you’ll monitor activity across the establishment, talk to prisoners or detained persons, and make sure they are treated fairly and are given the support they need.
You’ll need to undergo vetting before being formally appointed by Ministers in line with the Government’s public appointments process.
Although it’s an unpaid role, travel, childcare, and loss of earnings expenses are available, and full training and support are provided.
Feedback from current members says: “It could be the most rewarding thing you have ever done. You can make a real difference to prison life, not just in responding to an individual request or complaint, but also by raising concerns about everything from crumbling buildings to people being kept in solitary confinement for too long.”
Anyone over 18 can apply. Key qualities needed include analysis, decision making, communication, and teamwork skills, and a commitment to independence and inclusion, as well as an open-minded approach.
The time commitment is approximately three visits per month and one board meeting. Please note that this may be more during the induction period.
We are also looking for members for HMP Millsike. HMP Millsike is a new prison, due to open in April 2025, being built near HMP Full Sutton, near Stamford Bridge, and will be the first all-electric green prison. It is a male Category C prison and will hold nearly 1,500 prisoners. Although the prison doesn’t open until 2025, we want to set up a Board with experienced members from nearby prisons and new members as soon as possible so that new members can potentially begin their induction at other prisons and will be ready to go when HMP Millsike opens.
