Role description:
2nd St Thomas Scout Group are planning to open a brand-new Squirrel Drey later this year! Squirrels is the youngest section in Scouting for ages 4 to 6 years.
As a Squirrel Team Member, you will help provide a fun, safe and engaging programme on a weekly basis - from reading stories to setting up sensory play, leading games and running craft activities. You will also support the Squirrels to work towards their badges and eventually achieve their Chief Scouts Acorn Award.
New to Scouting? Don't worry, so are the Squirrels! As this is a brand new Drey, all young people will be brand new to the group. In the lead up to opening the Squirrel Drey, you may be asked to help behind-the-scenes, such as coming up with ideas to help plan the programme. The Squirrel Drey will be led by our Beaver Team Leader (ages 6 to 8), so you may also be invited to come to Beaver sessions to get to know some of the team before the Squirrel Drey opens.
Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
You don't need any experience in Scouting, or in an early years setting, to be a Squirrel Team Member.
You will need to bring lots of enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in. You need to be friendly and approachable to create a safe and welcoming environment for our Squirrels. You also need to be reliable and a good communicator to work with young children and fellow volunteers alike.
Will there be a DBS check? Yes
Driving Licence required? No
Volunteer's own vehicle required? No
Suitable for:
Ongoing Volunteering
What will the volunteer gain/benefit from:
You will develop lots of transferrable skills such as teamwork, activity planning, organisation, collaboration and leadership, as well as gaining experience working with an early years age group. Volunteering with the Scouts is a fantastic way to boost your CV, particularly if you're a student or looking to start a career working with children and young people.
