Role description:
Being a trustee for a charity is potentially one of the most rewarding things you could do. However, it comes with responsibility and hard work. The role can take up a lot of time, but we only ask trustees to do what they can realistically do, and especially because the role is voluntary and comes with no financial reward, other than reasonable expenses. This ranges from attending and actively participating in trustee meetings to taking more responsibility as note taker, treasurer, fund raiser and many other tasks. Trustees have a legal responsibility to provide governance, and form the governing board, holding overall legal responsibility for directing, controlling, and managing a charity's administration, strategy, and assets. They ensure the organization fulfils its charitable purpose, complies with legal requirements, manages risks, and acts in the best interests of beneficiaries.
Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
Bringing past experience to the charity and using this to help run and shape the direction of the charity. Being able to think strategically, and listen to members as well as other trustees. A variety of skills would be helpful but not essential, including finances, fund raising, person management, and helping to future proof the charity. The main skill is focussing and seeing things through, with a sense of commitment.
Demonstrate the ability to work with a team of trustees, and the members who attend the charity. Also, remining calm and being supporting of fellow trustees and members, including the ability to listen to others, and showing respect for all opinions.
