Role description:
We have a vacancy for two volunteer trustees to join the Trustee Board. The trustee board has responsibility for the overall direction, strategy, financial security and performance of the Charity. It’s stimulating, responsible work with an experienced and capable group. The Board normally meets six times a year. There are also occasional committee, strategy and other meetings, including with staff and volunteers.
Citizens Advice York (CAY) provides free advice and support to over 7,000 people a year, helping them with some 15000 different problems; We help clients access benefits
and services on topics such as welfare and housing benefits, employment, debt, energy costs and relationships. In 2024/25 this advice helped our clients write off nearly £3,000,000 in debts and gain over £2,000,000 additional income.
We’re run by a small professional team working alongside and supporting around 50 volunteers to provide advice at our base housed within the City Council office building in York, at various outreach venues around the City, by Webchat, and on the phone.
Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
We are particularly interested in recruiting trustees with the interest and experience to help develop further our fundraising activity. We are also interested in attracting trustees with experience of bringing diversity and inclusion to the board and of bringing the voices of diverse groups to our work.
Knowledge or experience of Citizens Advice is not essential
We are keen to have a more diverse board that reflects the local community
in York. We welcome applications from people with different work/life experiences and from all the different backgrounds that make up the community in York.
We are an independent local charity at the heart of our community, here in York entirely funded by grants, donations and fees for contracted services.
The trustee board has responsibility for the overall direction, strategy, financial security and performance of the Charity. With demand for services continuing to increase, and funding from City of York Council under continuing pressure, the Board recognises the need to seek additional funds from York employers: we are looking for expertise and commitment to fundraising, seeking a colleague who will also contribute to the overall successful guidance of a charity with an annual income of around £500,000.
