When are volunteers needed: Volunteer drivers need to be available during weekday daytimes, be able to get to the Hospice and competent in driving a minibus.

The 2nd Tuesday of the month 10:30 – 13:30 to transport patients to MND socials at The Folk Hall in News Earswick, and the 4th Wednesday of the month 13:00 – 17:00 to transport patients to the MND social at the Hospice.

There is potential for more opportunities as the Wellbeing & Outreach services grow.

Role description:
What will I be doing?
• Driving patients safely and comfortably between their home and St Leonard’s or community venue within our catchment.
• Recording the mileage and destinations of journeys you undertake for the Hospice.
• Keeping your driving documents up to date.

Support and Supervision
Volunteer drivers are supervised by all members of the Wellbeing & Outreach team, who will provide you with ongoing training, plan your duties, and liaise closely with you over all aspects of your tole and provide regular times for reflection and supervision. The Volunteer Services Team will help with you induction and be your point of contact for general enquiries about volunteering.

Training
Volunteers are required to complete our standard mandatory training modules, which are delivered via our online platform. Additional, booster and refresher training may be delivered as needed via e-learning, video links or face to face.

You will also be invited to attend community specific training in person.

About the Hospice
The St Leonard’s Wellbeing Service encompasses a range of services to support patients affected by life-limiting illnesses, as well as their families, friends, and carers, across our region. These services are held at the Hospice, or in suitable venues throughout our community and in patient’s homes.

St Leonard’s Hospice provides care and support to those living with life-limiting illnesses and to the people they care about. We couldn’t carry out the important work we do without a committed and talented team of Volunteers and Supporters – people of all ages, and from all walks of life who help us provide care, assistance, and support throughout the organisation, as well as promoting the work of the hospice in local communities and raising crucial funds.

Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
What skills and qualities will I need?
• Enjoy driving with a full clean driving licence.
• Friendly, warm personality.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Calm and unflappable.
• An understanding of mobility issues.
• An understanding of boundaries and confidentiality.
• Fit and able to move/ lift/ store a wheelchair, for example.
• The ability to understand the need for confidentiality and be able to adhere to safety policies.
• Punctuality, reliability, and common sense.
