Role description:
The York Mystery Plays return in 2026, bringing the city’s medieval waggon plays back to the streets. Plays are performed on waggons that travel between four locations in the city centre, in a world-famous outdoor theatre experience for audiences of all ages.

Event Stewards play a warm, public facing role at the 2026 York Mystery Plays, helping thousands of residents and visitors enjoy the return of wagon performances to the city centre.
As part of a friendly team at a performance station, you’ll welcome audiences, support safe crowd movement, and help the event run smoothly.
Tasks may include greeting audiences, answering questions, supporting entry to ticketed areas, keeping routes clear, offering accessibility support, selling merchandise or sharing information, and acting as a calm, visible point of contact. Any concerns are passed to the Station Master or Deputy.
No previous experience is required—kindness, reliability, and confidence with the public are what matter most.

Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
• Friendly, calm, and approachable when interacting with audiences
• Comfortable outdoors and in busy public spaces
• Confident communicating with a wide range of people
• Reliable and able to follow guidance from the Station Master or Deputy
• Happy working as part of a supportive team
• Willing to help with practical tasks such as crowd flow, accessibility support, or merchandise

Training and on the day support are provided to help you feel confident in the role.
