After three years of collaboration, Humber and North Yorkshire has launched its coproduced ‘On Our Terms’ Children and Young People’s Participation Strategy; a system-wide strategy designed to embed meaningful participation across the Children and Young People’s workforce in Humber and North Yorkshire.
This work has been led by the Nothing About Us Without Us (NAUWU) Children and Young People’s Mental Health Advisory Group (lived experience volunteers) and Clair Atherton, Children and Young People’s Engagement and Coproduction Manager, as part of the ongoing system change work across the Humber and North Yorkshire Children and Young People’s Trauma Informed Care Programme and the wider Mental Health Programme. A wide range of partners have also played a vital role in shaping the strategy, and the launch event on 1st October was delivered in partnership—reflecting the strong community of organisations driving this agenda across our geography.
What is ‘On Our Terms’?
The strategy sets out a clear ambition: to make meaningful participation “everyone’s business” and “business as usual” across the system.
It is built on:
- The Lundy Model of Participation – ensuring Children and Young People’s voices shape decisions that affect them
- Trauma Informed principles – creating safe, respectful, and supportive environments
- Insights from Children and Young People themselves
On Our Terms calls on all organisations working with or for Children and Young People to involve them in decisions that impact their lives.
Introducing the Community of Practice
To support implementation, we’ve launched the ‘On Our Terms’ Community of Practice, an online space for professionals to:
- Share ideas and good practice
- Learn together
- Build confidence
- Embed participation in everyday work
Members will also have access to meeting links, launch presentations, recordings, and resources via FuturesNHS.
Next Community of Practice Session
We’re delighted to welcome Professor Laura Lundy, creator of the Lundy Model of Participation, as guest speaker at our next session:
📅 Tuesday 11 February 2026
🕐 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM (Online)
Professor Lundy said:“It is inspiring to see so many organisations across Humber and North Yorkshire coming together under the On Our Terms strategy, led by the Humber and North Yorkshire ICB and shaped by the voices and leadership of Children and Young People, to embed the Lundy Model of Participation. Keep striving to turn rights into action with Children and Young People at the centre, not just in words, but in decisions, practice, and power.”
