There is a pressing issue of digital poverty in the UK and End Digital Poverty Day (12 September) is a nationwide initiative dedicated to raising awareness. The Digital Poverty Alliance aim is to eradicate digital poverty in the UK. The Digital Poverty Alliance was founded by The Learning Foundation with seed-funding from Currys and ongoing support from the Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Digital Poverty Alliance are tackling digital poverty in a number of ways:

  • Advocating for change: Raising awareness
  • Conducting research: Building the evidence base
  • Joining the dots: Bringing a community together
  • Real help now: Projects we can learn from

They have three key messages to communicate far and wide:

  • End digital poverty together. We need a UK-wide digital inclusion strategy and an integrated programme to ensure sustainable and affordable digital access for all.
  • Digital access is a basic right. We need cross-sector collaboration to ensure that everyone has the support, capability, and confidence to navigate the Internet, both now and in the future.
  • Empower people and communities. We need to expand our knowledge of what works and empower local communities to develop, coordinate and scale support to end digital poverty

Part of the way to help tackle digital poverty is to raise awareness to it and businesses, organisations, charities and individuals are invited to get involved during Ending Digital Poverty Day, 12 September. Resources are available at your finger tips from the Digital Poverty Alliance website so you can easily share and spread the word.
