The following message is from City of York Council:
With extremely high temperatures forecast for York and the surrounding areas today and tomorrow, we’re working with partners to provide information and advice to people living and working in the city. Please feel free to share the information below with your workforce.
While many people enjoy the heat, it can cause difficulties for others, particularly those over 75, people with serious medical conditions and babies and young children.
The advice from public health is to do all you can to stay out of the heat, stay cool and drink water – if you do need to go out apply sunscreen of factor 30 or higher, wear light clothing, a hat and sunglasses, if you can.
There is lots of good advice here: Beat the Heat- Staying Safe in Hot Weather.
Remember that York’s Rivers should never be used as a way to cool off. Hidden debris, unexpected cold temperatures and strong currents make them a dangerous place even for strong swimmers.
The council is working hard to ensure that services continue as normal where possible. Our waste teams have been out earlier than usual today, starting their rounds at 6am, and will also be out early tomorrow to avoid the worst of the high temperatures, and our highways teams are also out doing high temperature ‘gritting’ to ensure road safety. Our thanks go out to all those who are working in very difficult conditions to keep services operating.
For those travelling by rail, services are expected to be impacted by the high temperatures. Network Rail has announced that there will be a reduced train service operating today [Monday], with some speed reductions in place. There will be no trains from York heading south from noon tomorrow [Tuesday] until 8pm.
For further information on the rail line closure visit Red weather warning – East Coast Main Line to close – Network Rail. For latest train service information see National Rail Enquiries

Please take care over the next two days and let’s keep working together to help support those who may find the hot weather particularly challenging.
