Last month, the Social Prescribing Team here at York CVS brought some seasonal cheer to its monthly art group with a free wreath making session. The art group is designed for people who have accessed social prescribing and may feel too anxious to attend community groups straight away.

Social Prescribing Manager, Abbie said: “We use this group as a way of building people’s confidence and supporting them to feel able to access further social support.

Many external wreath making events can be very busy or book up quickly. We wanted to offer an accessible and calm alternative, where people could create something festive and enjoy a gentle few hours together.”

The festive morning welcomed a mixed group of attendees who spent time chatting and crafting.

One client said: “Even though I was nervous to join in, I had a great time making a wreath. I’ve now put it in pride of place on my front door. It was a great idea and got me out of the house away from my worries. It’s being supported but in a different environment. Many thanks”

The session was kindly led by Sally, a qualified Arts Therapist, who volunteered her time.

Sally said: “As a former florist and now an Integrative Counsellor, I really value opportunities that bring people together through creativity and connection. The wreath-making workshop was a wonderful example of how a simple, shared activity can nurture conversation, mindfulness, and community spirit. It was a joy to see everyone engage and support one another in such a warm and uplifting space.” – Sally Minskip, Integrative Counsellor

Sessions like these form an important part of how social prescribing helps people feel more confident, supported and ready to join wider community activities.

“To all those lovely people that helped at the wreath making art and craft group at York Art Gallery you are superstars – and for all the foliage brought along with creatures on it.”

“I found it very rewarding and therapeutic. It was very relaxing, friendly and nice meeting other people. I thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt too about the greenery used in making the wreaths. I gave the wreath to my brother and his wife. They were very happy and thrilled with it. Thank you for a lovely morning with you all held at the York Art Gallery.”

“I’m so pleased that I managed to learn something new, even though I do make some wreaths at home, the material i use is different. I’m looking forward to learn more from you. It is so gratifying to see you motivating us to do things with our own hands, no matter what the circumstances we have, we did it, with all your help. Would like to pass my thanks to everyone, including my lovely Karen who’s always by my side.”
