Introducing Volunteer It Yourself (VIY), a community interest company on a mission to empower young people and create brighter futures. VIY offer free, short-term work experience placements to young individuals between the ages of 14 and 24 who may not be engaged in employment, education, or training, or are at risk of disengagement. Their goal is to provide those people with valuable skills, practical experience, and accredited qualifications, all while making a positive impact on their lives.

A Path to Success

When young people dedicate themselves to three days of work on a VIY project, they are rewarded with a City & Guilds Entry Level 3 qualification. These qualifications cover a range of practical skills, including carpentry, painting & decorating, health & safety, and brickwork. Through hands-on experience, participants not only gain valuable knowledge but also develop essential life skills that will serve them well in the future.

But what does VIY look like in action? You can get a glimpse of their work by watching “The VIY Experience” on YouTube.

VIY in York: Upcoming project

Project: Fulford Arms – York
When: Tuesday 21 November – Friday 1 December (10am – 3pm)
Where: 121 Fulford Road, York, YO10 4EX

At the Fulford Arms, VIY will be working  to enhance accessibility and safety while updating the venue. Here’s what they have planned:

  • Constructing a Disabled Ramp: Building a disabled ramp to ensure that everyone can access the building easily, making it more inclusive for all users.
  • Improving Health and Safety: Create a DJ box to hide wires and potential trip hazards, enhancing the general health and safety of the building.
  • Room Renovation: Transform two upstairs rooms, previously part of a B&B, into changing rooms for music acts who perform at the venue. This will not only improve functionality but also enhance the overall experience for performers.

The project spans two weeks. We encourage young people in the York area to join us in this rewarding experience.

VIY Impact: Changing Lives, Building Futures

Over the past decade, VIY has worked with over 13,000 young people on various projects across the country, leaving a lasting impact.

At Volunteer It Yourself, they believe that every young person deserves a chance to build a brighter future. Their projects not only create tangible improvements in communities but also provide invaluable life lessons and skills. Young people of York are invited to join us in the Fulford Arms project, where they can learn, grow, and make a real impact.
