Youth Volunteering

As part of national Volunteers’ Week, today (2 June) focuses on the ‘Power of Youth’! According to the National Youth Survey (2019), 88% of young people under 20 stated that they cared about contributing to make the world a better place, but many were not able to find volunteering opportunities in their local area. We’ve complied a list of local volunteering opportunities for young people in York. You can view the full list on our Volunteer Centre webpage.

The Power of Youth Charter – #iwill

Has your organisation signed the Power Of Youth charter to make it easier for young people to help shape society?

The #iwill campaign wants to make participation in social action the norm for young people under 20. Currently 4 in 10 young people participate in meaningful social action. Those from less affluent communities are much less likely to take part than their wealthier peers. To achieve this, the #iwill campaign communicates with, connects and challenges organisations across the UK so that they embed support for youth social action into their culture and practice.

Celebrating Student Volunteering

This Volunteers’ Week, Connor Briggs, Community Manager at the University of York Students’ Union tells us about some of the amazing roles student volunteers are involved in across the city.

Young Trustee Movement

Have you heard of the Young Trustee Movement? With less than 3% of charity trustees under the age of 30, the Movement, made up of current and aspiring young trustees, employers and allies, aims to double the number of trustees aged 30 and under on charity boards by 2024!

The Governance Code states that “diversity, in the widest sense, is essential for boards to stay informed and responsive and to navigate the fast-paced and complex changes facing the voluntary sector. Boards whose trustees have different backgrounds and experience are more likely to encourage debate and to make better decisions”.

The campaign therefore is part of a wider call for board diversity. Visit the Young Trustees Movement website to find out how your organisation can get involved.
