York Poverty Truth Commission (PTC) has embarked on the second phase of its transformative mission; bringing together Community Commissioners and Civic Commissioners to address the critical issues surrounding poverty across our city.

This innovative initiative, which began by putting those with direct experience of poverty at the forefront, is now moving forward to create lasting change.

The York PTC is a collaboration between individuals who have experienced poverty (Community Commissioners) and Civic Commissioners who are in a position to implement change.

During this second phase, these dedicated commissioners will engage in deep conversations, drawing upon their collective experience and insight to explore potential solutions and strategies for implementation within their respective organisations and institutions.

Paul Kissack, Group CEO for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Housing Trust, expressed his support for the York Poverty Truth Commission, stating:

“I am honored to be a Civic Commissioner on the York Poverty Truth Commission and delighted that the Joseph Rowntree Foundation is supporting the Commission. We can only hope to achieve social justice in our city by listening to those who are too often trapped in poverty – understanding the challenges they face and involving them in creative ways to improve services. The Commission is only just getting started but is already starting to break down barriers between city leaders and those living in the community.”

The Community Commissioners have issued a combined statement regarding their involvement in the Poverty Truth Commission:

“We are involved in the York Poverty Truth Commission because we believe we can make a difference to people’s lives here in York. Through the process we are definitely educating ourselves and hopefully others. We feel that a little pebble can start a ripple that will become a big wave for change regarding poverty in our wonderful City. A single voice gets lost in the wind, but together we can be heard when the right people are listening.”

York Poverty Truth Commission is continuing its vital work in bringing real change to the city’s approach to tackling poverty by emphasising the importance of collective knowledge, collaboration and being led by the voices of those who have experienced poverty.
